Theoretical Clean Bond Price ($): 1077.95
$

Principal redemption value at final maturity

%

Annual coupon interest rate paid on face value

%

Prevailing market discount rate or required yield to maturity

Number of years remaining until maturity

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the bond’s face par value (typically $1,000).
  2. Enter the contractual coupon rate percentage.
  3. Enter the current prevailing market interest rate (required yield).
  4. Enter the remaining years until maturity.

Formula & Calculation Methodology

P = ∑ [C / (1 + r/2)ᵗ] + [F / (1 + r/2)²ⁿ]

Bond pricing equates the sum of the discounted semi-annual coupon annuity to the discounted lump-sum face par redemption at the market required rate.

CSemi-annual coupon payment (Face Value × Coupon ÷ 2)
rMarket yield to maturity (annualized decimal)
nYears to maturity (2n total semi-annual periods)
FFace par value repaid at terminal maturity

Worked Example

$1,000 par bond with 6% coupon and 10 years maturity priced against 5% market yield

faceValue: 1000
couponRatePct: 6
marketYieldPct: 5
yearsToMaturity: 10
Result: Bond Price: $1,077.95 (Price: 107.80% of Par | Current Yield: 5.57%)

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does a bond trade at a premium above par value?↓

When a bond’s contractual coupon rate (e.g. 6%) exceeds prevailing market rates (e.g. 5%), investors are willing to pay more than $1,000 par value to lock in superior interest income.

What is the difference between clean price and dirty price?↓

The clean price excludes accrued interest between coupon payment dates. The dirty price (full cash purchase price) includes accrued interest owed to the seller since the last distribution.

How does maturity length affect bond price volatility (duration)?↓

Longer-maturity bonds have higher duration, meaning their prices experience much larger percentage swings for any given change in interest rates compared to short-term notes.

What happens to bond price as maturity approaches?↓

Through the financial phenomenon known as "pull to par," bond prices converge steadily toward $1,000 par value as the final maturity date draws near, regardless of starting premiums or discounts.
