Density Calculator

Density is one of the most fundamental physical properties of matter, expressing the mass contained within a given unit volume (ρ = m / V). Whether you are identifying an unknown mineral in geology, verifying material purity in metallurgy, or assessing Archimedean buoyancy in naval architecture, this calculator instantly determines volumetric density across both SI metric and imperial units alongside specific gravity relative to pure water.

Density (kg/m³): 1000

Total mass or weight of the object or substance

Unit of measurement for mass

Total three-dimensional space occupied by the substance

Unit of measurement for volume

Density (kg/m³)
1,000.000

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the measured mass of the sample and select its unit (e.g. grams, kilograms, pounds).
  2. Enter the corresponding volume displacement and select its volume unit.
  3. Inspect the resulting density across SI (kg/m³, g/cm³) and Imperial (lb/ft³) systems.
  4. Review specific gravity and freshwater buoyancy status to evaluate whether the object will float or sink.

Formula & Calculation Methodology

ρ = m / V

Density (ρ) is calculated by dividing mass (m) by volume (V). Specific gravity is the ratio of material density to standard reference water density at 4°C (1,000 kg/m³).

ρVolumetric mass density (kg/m³ or g/cm³)
mTotal mass of the body (kg or converted equivalent)
VTotal displacement volume (m³ or converted equivalent)
SGSpecific gravity relative to water (dimensionless)

Worked Example

Pure aluminium block weighing 2.70 kilograms with a volume of 1 litre (0.001 m³)

mass: 2.7
massUnit: kg
volume: 1
volumeUnit: L
Result: 2,700 kg/m³ (Density: 2.7000 g/cm³, Specific Gravity: 2.7000, Sinks in freshwater)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is specific gravity and why is it unitless?↓

Specific gravity is the ratio of a substance's density to the density of pure water at 4°C (1,000 kg/m³). Because it divides two identical density units, the units cancel out, leaving a dimensionless scalar.

Why does water density vary with temperature?↓

Water molecules reach their maximum packing density at 3.98°C (approximately 1,000 kg/m³). As water cools toward freezing, hexagonal hydrogen-bonded crystal lattices expand, causing ice (917 kg/m³) to float.

What is the difference between bulk density and true particle density?↓

True density excludes all pores, cracks, and voids within a solid. Bulk density includes interstitial air spaces between particles, which is critical for soil science, agriculture, and powder logistics.

What limitation applies when calculating density under extreme pressure?↓

This tool assumes incompressible bulk matter under normal standard temperature and pressure (STP). For gases and compressible liquids under extreme hydraulic pressures, equation-of-state corrections are required.
