Livestock Feed Conversion Ratio Calculator

Calculate the Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) and Feed Efficiency percentage for commercial poultry, swine, beef cattle, sheep, and aquaculture operations. Determine how efficiently your livestock converts pounds or kilograms of feed into live body mass gain.

Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR): 1.6

Total weight of feed ration fed to the animals during the measured period

Net live weight gained across the flock, herd, or individual animal (Final Weight - Starting Weight)

Species category for biological benchmark rating

Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR)
1.60

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Measure the total mass of feed delivered to the livestock during the production cycle.
  2. Weigh the animals to calculate total net live weight gain (End Weight - Initial Weight).
  3. Select your species (Poultry, Swine, Cattle, or Fish).
  4. Review the computed FCR, Feed Efficiency percentage, and commercial benchmark rating.

Formula & Calculation Methodology

FCR = Total Feed Consumed ÷ Total Live Weight Gained | FE% = (1 ÷ FCR) × 100

The Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) is the standard agricultural measure of an animal’s biological efficiency in converting feed mass into marketable body mass. A lower FCR indicates superior feed efficiency and reduced production costs.

FeedMass of feed ingested over trial or cycle
WeightGainedNet liveweight gain achieved

Worked Example

Broiler chicken flock: 320 kg feed consumed to produce 200 kg weight gain

feedConsumedKg: 320
weightGainedKg: 200
animalType: broiler
Result: 1.60 FCR (62.5% Feed Efficiency • Excellent / High Efficiency Poultry)

Growing swine: 900 kg feed consumed for 300 kg live gain

feedConsumedKg: 900
weightGainedKg: 300
animalType: swine
Result: 3.00 FCR (33.3% Feed Efficiency • Good Swine Efficiency)

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a lower FCR better in livestock farming?↓

Feed represents 60% to 75% of total production costs in commercial livestock farming. A lower FCR means less feed is required to produce each pound or kilogram of meat, directly lowering operating expenses and carbon footprint.

Why do fish have a much lower FCR than cattle?↓

Fish are cold-blooded poikilotherms (spending zero energy maintaining body temperature) and live in a buoyant aquatic environment (expending minimal energy fighting gravity for skeletal support), allowing up to 80% of dietary intake to convert to edible protein.

What causes FCR to worsen (increase) during a grow-out cycle?↓

As animals mature, a greater proportion of daily nutrients goes toward biological body maintenance rather than muscle growth. In addition, feed spillage, cold stress, internal parasites, and sub-optimal ventilation worsen FCR.

What is a limitation of raw FCR calculations?↓

FCR does not account for feed moisture differences (e.g. wet silage vs. dry pelleted grain) or the differing nutritional value of dressing percentage (carcass yield vs. live weight).
