Final Grade Calculator

Find out precisely what score or percentage you must achieve on your final examination to earn your desired course grade. Factoring in your current class average and the syllabus weight of the final test, this tool assesses exam feasibility and calculates safety margins.

Score Needed on Final: 360

Your current cumulative class average prior to the final exam (e.g. 86.5%)

Target overall course grade (e.g. 90.0% for an A, 80.0% for a B)

Percentage of the total course grade determined by the final exam

Score Needed on Final
360.00%

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Check your online student portal (Canvas, Blackboard, Google Classroom) for your current class grade.
  2. Enter your desired target grade for the course (e.g. 90% for an A).
  3. Enter the final exam weight percentage from the syllabus.
  4. View the exact percentage you need to score on the final test immediately.

Formula & Calculation Methodology

Final Exam Score Needed = [ Target Grade − (Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) ] / Final Weight

Solves the linear weighted grade equation: Current × (1 − W) + Final × W = Target. Isolating the final exam variable determines the exact percentage required.

Target GradeDesired overall class percentage (e.g. 90% for an A)
Current GradeExisting course standing from homework, labs, and midterms
Final WeightFractional weight of the final exam (e.g. 0.25 for 25%)

Worked Example

Holding an 86.5% average and aiming for a 90.0% final course grade with a 25% final exam weight

currentGrade: 86.5
desiredGrade: 90
finalWeightPercent: 25
Result: Score Needed: 100.50% (Requires 100.5% — extra credit or curve needed, Minimum to keep a C: 20.50%)

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean if the required final score is over 100%?↓

If the calculation returns a number greater than 100%, mathematically your target cannot be achieved through regular grading alone. You would need extra credit assignments, a class curve, or faculty discretion.

What if the required final score is negative or zero?↓

If your required score is 0% or negative, congratulations! You have already accumulated enough weighted course points that you cannot drop below your target even if you score zero on the final.

How does final exam weight affect the required score?↓

Higher final exam weights give you more leverage to change your grade. If an exam is worth 50%, you can substantially raise a low grade; if it is only worth 10%, your ability to shift the overall letter grade is limited.

What limitation applies if grades are curved?↓

This calculator assumes fixed percentage grade boundaries (e.g. 90% = A). In curved classes where letter grades are assigned by percentile rank, required raw scores depend on cohort performance.
