Freight Cost Calculator

Estimate international and domestic commercial freight shipments. Calculate ocean container and air freight charges across cargo weight, cubic volume (CBM), fuel adjustment factors (BAF), and port terminal handling charges (THC) to determine true landed product costs.

Total Freight Invoice Cost: 0

Cubic meters of cargo space (L x W x H in meters)

$

Freight forwarder base rate per cubic meter or revenue ton

$

BAF (Bunker Adjustment Factor) ocean fuel surcharge

$

THC, origin documentation, and customs clearance fees

Total product items transported in this cargo shipment

Total Freight Invoice Cost
$0.00

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter total cubic meters (CBM) of your LCL or FCL cargo shipment.
  2. Enter freight quote rate per CBM from your freight forwarder.
  3. Enter bunker fuel adjustment factor (BAF) and port terminal handling charges (THC).
  4. Enter total merchandise units shipped to calculate landed freight cost per item.

Formula & Calculation Methodology

Total Freight = (Volume CBM * Rate/CBM) + Fuel Surcharge + Terminal Handling; Cost/Unit = Total Freight / Units

Multiplies cubic volume by ocean freight rate and adds mandatory port terminal handling and bunker fuel adjustments.

CBMCubic Meters of cargo space occupied
Rate/CBMForwarder ocean carrier baseline freight quote per CBM
Landed Cost/UnitIncremental freight cost incurred per single imported product

Worked Example

15 CBM shipment at $140/CBM with $350 fuel, $450 port fees transporting 3,000 units

cargoVolumeCbm: 15
freightRatePerCbm: 140
bunkerFuelSurcharge: 350
terminalHandlingCharges: 450
totalUnitsShipped: 3000
Result: Total Freight: $2,900.00 (Cost Per Unit: $0.967, Base: $2,100.00)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between LCL and FCL in ocean freight?↓

FCL (Full Container Load) books an exclusive 20-foot or 40-foot ocean container at a flat rate. LCL (Less than Container Load) consolidates your cargo with other shippers, charging per cubic meter (CBM).

What is a Revenue Ton (w/m) in freight billing?↓

Carriers bill using "Weight or Measure" (w/m), comparing 1 Metric Ton (1,000 kg) against 1 Cubic Meter (CBM). The carrier bills based on whichever value is larger.

What does "Landed Cost" mean in inventory accounting?↓

Landed cost is the complete total cost of a product upon arriving at your warehouse door, including initial factory price, ocean freight, customs tariffs, marine insurance, and harbor drayage.

Why are terminal handling charges (THC) billed separately?↓

THC covers port crane operations to lift containers on and off vessels, port storage, and wharfage fees assessed by destination port authorities.
