Fuel Consumption Calculator
Analyze your vehicle fuel consumption and running costs across international metrics including L/100km, US MPG, and Imperial MPG. Simply input the distance traveled, fuel volume consumed, and unit fuel price to determine accurate burn rates and per-kilometer travel expenditure without any server latency.
Total distance completed on this fuel fill
Volume of gasoline or diesel pumped to refill tank
Current retail price per liter at the pump
Standard metric fuel consumption rate
How to Use This Calculator
- Fill your vehicle fuel tank completely and record your initial odometer reading or reset trip meter.
- Drive normally until your next scheduled fuel stop.
- Refill the tank to full capacity and record the exact liters pumped from the fuel receipt.
- Enter the trip odometer distance and liters filled into the calculator fields.
- Review your vehicle real-world L/100km, US MPG, and direct cost per kilometre.
Formula & Calculation Methodology
Metric consumption calculates liters consumed per 100 kilometres. US MPG is derived using the standard EPA conversion constant 235.215, while UK Imperial MPG uses 282.481 based on the 4.546-liter imperial gallon.
Worked Example
Driving 500 km on 40 liters of petrol priced at $1.65/L
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my real-world fuel consumption differ from the manufacturer sticker?↓
Official window sticker ratings derive from standardized lab dynamometer cycles (WLTP or EPA). Real-world driving involves traffic congestion, aggressive acceleration, AC usage, roof racks, cold weather, and undulating terrain, which typically increase consumption by 15% to 25%.
What is the mathematical difference between US MPG and UK Imperial MPG?↓
A US liquid gallon is approximately 3.785 liters, whereas a British Imperial gallon is approximately 4.546 liters (20% larger). Consequently, the same vehicle achieves a higher numerical MPG figure in the UK than in the United States.
How can I immediately improve my car fuel economy?↓
Maintaining correct tire pressures, eliminating unnecessary cargo weight, avoiding rapid throttle inputs, utilizing cruise control on open highways, and observing posted speed limits can improve fuel economy by 10% to 20%.
Does air conditioning usage significantly increase fuel consumption?↓
Yes. Operating the AC compressor under hot summer conditions can increase fuel consumption by 5% to 15% in conventional vehicles and noticeably reduce range in electric vehicles.
What limitation should I keep in mind when measuring fuel economy over one tank?↓
Single-tank measurements can be skewed by pump shut-off sensitivity variations, vehicle tilt on uneven forecourt slabs, or temperature changes causing fuel expansion. Averaging across 3 consecutive fill-ups provides superior statistical accuracy.
