Median Calculator

Find the exact statistical median value of odd or even datasets. The median isolates the 50th percentile, providing an outlier-resistant metric of central tendency for real estate prices, incomes, and test scores.

  3. Inspect the automatically sorted sequence and min/max extremes below.

Formula & Calculation Methodology

Odd n: x_((n+1)/2) | Even n: [x_(n/2) + x_(n/2 + 1)] ÷ 2

For odd sample sizes, the median is the single value located at position (n+1)/2. For even sample sizes, it is the arithmetic average of the two middle elements.

nNumber of observations
x_iValue at sorted index i

Worked Example

Odd dataset: 5, 8, 12, 17, 23, 31, 42

numbers: 5, 8, 12, 17, 23, 31, 42
Result: 17.0000 (Middle element at index 4 of 7)

Even dataset: 10, 20, 30, 40

numbers: 10, 20, 30, 40
Result: 25.0000 (Average of 20 and 30)

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the median preferred over the mean for income and housing?↓

The median is resistant to extreme skewness. High-value mansions or billionaire wages inflate the mean, but have zero effect on the median.

Do I need to sort my numbers before entering them?↓

No. The calculator automatically parses and sorts your inputs in ascending order before computing.

How does the calculator handle an even number of entries?↓

When n is even, there is no single middle number, so the engine takes the average of the two central numbers.

What is a limitation of the median?↓

The median ignores the specific magnitudes of non-middle values, so it does not convey overall sample totals or aggregate budgets.
