Formula & Calculation Methodology

Days to Finish = Ceil[ (Total Pages − Current Page) / (Current Page / Days Reading) ]

Calculates current reading velocity in pages per day, then divides unread pages by that velocity. Multiplying remaining pages by minutes per page yields total remaining reading hours.

VelocityCurrent Page / Days Reading (pages per day)
Remaining PagesTotal Pages − Current Page
Hours Remaining(Remaining Pages × Minutes Per Page) / 60

Worked Example

380-page book at page 152 after 8 days of reading (1.8 min/page)

totalPages: 380
currentPage: 152
daysReading: 8
minutesPerPage: 1.8
Result: 40.0% Complete (Pace: 19.0 pages/day, Days Remaining: 12 days, Hours Remaining: 6.8 hrs)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an average reading speed for academic books?↓

An average adult reads general prose at approximately 200 to 250 words per minute (~1.5 to 2.0 minutes per standard page). Dense technical textbooks, legal briefs, and medical research typically require 3 to 5 minutes per page.

How can I finish my reading assignment faster?↓

Setting a steady daily page quota (e.g. 25 pages per day) and eliminating distractions during 25-minute reading blocks dramatically increases consistency compared to occasional multi-hour reading sessions.

Does this calculator account for appendices and indexes?↓

To get the most accurate timeline, enter the final page of actual text (e.g. page 320 where the conclusion ends) rather than including unread index and bibliography pages.

What limitation applies if my daily reading time is irregular?↓

This tool calculates an overall daily average. If you read only on weekends, calculate your schedule using our Pages Per Day Calculator with specific target deadline dates.
