Normal full monthly salary before attendance adjustments
Total business working days (excluding weekends and statutory holidays)
Days of unpaid absence or days before joining mid-month
Adjusted gross salary to be disbursed for actual days worked
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your full monthly contractual salary.
- Enter the total number of business working days in the relevant calendar month.
- Enter the number of unpaid leave days taken or days before your start date.
- Review your prorated monthly salary, effective daily rate, and total deduction amount.
Formula & Calculation Methodology
The daily rate is derived by dividing full contractual monthly salary by available business working days in that specific calendar month. The unpaid deduction multiplies daily rate by missed days, leaving prorated payable salary.
Worked Example
Mid-month hire with 3 missed days in a 22-working-day month on a $5,000 monthly salary
Frequently Asked Questions
How do employers typically calculate working days in a month?↓
Most payroll departments count Monday through Friday business days, excluding recognized statutory public holidays. Depending on the calendar month and holidays, working days range from 19 to 23 days.
What is the difference between calendar day and working day proration?↓
Working day proration divides monthly salary by working days (e.g. 21 or 22). Calendar day proration divides by all calendar days (28, 30, or 31). Working day proration is generally preferred and legally standard because employees are paid specifically for contracted workdays.
Can an employer deduct pay for partial-day absences under FLSA?↓
Under US FLSA rules for exempt salaried employees, employers generally cannot deduct pay for partial-day absences without jeopardizing the employee exempt status, except under specific circumstances like FMLA leave or initial/terminal weeks of employment.
What limitation should I keep in mind when using this tool?↓
This calculator computes gross prorated earnings and does not apply tax brackets, benefit withholdings, or weekend/overtime shift premiums.
