Calories Burned Running Calculator
Calculate the total caloric expenditure of your outdoor road, track, or treadmill run using the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities and Margaria running physiology formulas. Enter your body weight, duration, and running speed or intensity to determine total kilocalories, calories per km/mile, and substrate fuel utilization.
Current body weight in kilograms (70 kg ≈ 154 lbs)

Gross energy expenditure in kilocalories utilized during the running workout
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your body weight in kilograms.
- Input total workout running duration in minutes.
- Select your pace intensity bracket (or enter exact treadmill km/h speed).
- Review total calories burned, burn rate per minute, and calories per kilometre.
- Observe glycogen carbohydrate versus adipose fat grams oxidized during the run.
Formula & Calculation Methodology
The physiological energy cost of horizontal running is remarkably constant across speeds: approximately 1.0 to 1.04 kcal per kilogram of body weight per kilometre traversed (Margaria et al.). Higher running velocities burn more calories per unit time by compressing more distance into fewer minutes.
Worked Example
A 70 kg runner jogging at a moderate 9.7 km/h pace (9.8 METs) for 30 minutes
Frequently Asked Questions
Does running 5 km fast burn significantly more calories than running 5 km slowly?↓
Surprisingly, no. Running a fixed distance (such as 5 km) requires nearly identical total caloric energy (~70 kcal per km for a 70 kg runner, or ~350 total kcal) whether completed in 20 minutes or 35 minutes. Running faster simply burns those calories in less time and elevates post-exercise excess oxygen consumption (EPOC).
Why does body weight have such a massive impact on running calories?↓
Running is a biomechanical series of forward bounding hops where your lower limbs must repeatedly lift and propel your total mass against gravity with every stride. A 90 kg runner burns approximately 28% more calories per kilometre than a 70 kg runner covering the exact same distance.
How many calories are burned per mile of running?↓
A classic exercise science rule of thumb is that running burns roughly 0.65 to 0.75 calories per pound of body weight per mile. For a 150 lb runner, that equates to roughly 100 to 110 calories per mile.
What is the "afterburn effect" (EPOC) from high-intensity running?↓
Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) refers to elevated metabolic rate after strenuous running as the body restores ATP, clears lactate, replenishes muscle glycogen, and repairs micro-trauma. EPOC adds an additional 6% to 15% of total workout caloric burn over the subsequent 12 to 24 hours.
What are the limitations of running calorie formulas?↓
This calculation assumes horizontal, hard-surface running. Running through soft sand, technical muddy trails, adverse headwinds, or steep uphill grades increases metabolic energy demand by 15% to 40%.
