Pace to Speed Calculator
Seamlessly convert running pace into speed and vice versa for track, road, and treadmill training. Enter your minutes and seconds per kilometre or mile to immediately calculate velocity in km/h and mph, 400-metre track lap split times, and projected finish times for 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, and Marathon races.
Minutes portion of your running or walking pace (e.g. 5 for 5:30 pace)
Seconds portion of your pace (0 to 59 seconds)
Select whether your input represents metric (min/km) or imperial (min/mi) pacing
Speed in kilometres per hour (standard treadmill speed setting worldwide)
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the minutes and seconds of your target running pace.
- Select whether your pace is measured in minutes per kilometre or minutes per mile.
- View your instantaneous treadmill speed in both km/h and mph.
- Check your 400m track lap split for pacing track workouts.
- Review steady-state finish times across 5K, 10K, and full Marathon distances.
Formula & Calculation Methodology
Pace represents elapsed time per fixed unit of distance. Velocity is the reciprocal of pace multiplied by 60 minutes. Unit conversion leverages 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometres.
Worked Example
A runner holding a 5:00 min/km pace
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I set my treadmill when training for an outdoor 5K race pace?↓
Treadmills without grade lack outdoor wind resistance. Exercise physiologists recommend setting treadmill incline to 1.0% to offset the lack of air drag, and converting your target outdoor min/km or min/mile pace directly to treadmill km/h or mph using this tool.
What is the relationship between running pace and running velocity?↓
Pace and velocity are inverse mathematical functions. While speed increases linearly (e.g. 10 to 12 km/h is a 2 km/h increase), pace drops exponentially (6:00 min/km drops to 5:00 min/km, which is a 60-second drop per km).
Why do track runners use 400m lap split pacing?↓
Standard outdoor athletics tracks are exactly 400 metres in Lane 1. Knowing your exact 400m lap split allows you to monitor pace every single lap rather than waiting for GPS watches, which can fluctuate on tight track curves.
What pace is needed to break 4 hours in a marathon?↓
To finish a 42.195 km marathon in under 4:00:00, you must sustain a minimum average pace of 5:41 per kilometre (9:09 per mile), which corresponds to a constant speed of 10.55 km/h (6.55 mph).
Does this calculator assume flat terrain?↓
Yes. This conversion calculates pure flat kinematic velocity. Running on steep inclines or adverse wind conditions requires higher metabolic power output at lower ground speeds.
