Fuel Split Calculator

Split vehicle fuel costs and highway tolls transparently between friends, coworkers, or road trip travel companions. Enter travel distance, vehicle fuel economy, pump price, tolls, and headcount to calculate individual shares down to the cent without awkward negotiations or calculation errors.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the total route distance traveled during the shared trip or weekly carpool.
  2. Enter the vehicle average fuel efficiency (e.g. 30 MPG).
  3. Input the prevailing fuel pump price per gallon or liter.
  4. Add any bridge tolls, highway turnpike charges, and parking fees.
  5. Set the total headcount (all passengers plus the vehicle driver).
  6. Distribute the exact individual share calculated for each participant.

Formula & Calculation Methodology

Individual Share = [((Distance ÷ MPG) × Fuel_Price) + Tolls] ÷ People

Calculates total liquid fuel volume needed from distance and fuel efficiency, multiplies by pump unit price, adds shared highway toll and parking expenses, and divides equally by group size.

DistanceDistance traveled in miles or kilometres
MPGVehicle fuel efficiency rating in MPG or km/L
PriceRetail price per fuel volume unit
TollsAll bridge, turnpike, and destination parking receipts
PeopleTotal number of contributing individuals

Worked Example

A 240-mile journey in a 30 MPG car with $3.50/gal gas, $16 in tolls, split among 4 friends

distance: 240
fuelEconomyMpg: 30
fuelPricePerGallon: 3.5
tollsAndParking: 16
passengerCount: 4
Result: $11.00 per person ($44.00 total trip expense, $28.00 fuel cost, 8.00 gallons total, 2.00 gal/person)

Frequently Asked Questions

Should the vehicle owner or driver also pay an equal share of fuel?↓

In social road trips, fuel and tolls are typically split equally among all travelers including the driver. However, because the vehicle owner bears maintenance, oil changes, tire wear, and depreciation, passengers often offer to cover the driver share or pay for their meals as a courtesy.

How should we handle carpool members who only ride on certain days?↓

For irregular carpooling, calculate the daily cost per person (daily trip cost ÷ that day passenger count) and bill riders only for the specific days they actively occupied a seat.

Can this calculator be used for electric vehicles (EVs)?↓

Yes. For electric vehicles, enter the total session charging receipt amount under "Tolls & Parking Fees" and set distance to 0, which divides the exact charging expenditure among all passengers.

How do highway tolls affect the individual split calculation?↓

Tolls are added directly to the fuel total before dividing by passenger count, ensuring that turnpikes and bridge passes are shared with equal fairness.

What limitation should be kept in mind regarding air conditioning and roof racks?↓

Heavy passenger loads and full trunks with luggage can reduce fuel economy by 5% to 10% below standard solo commuting ratings. Reducing your expected MPG by 2 to 3 points provides a more realistic cost split.
