Formula & Calculation Methodology
Dividing total tolerable monetary loss by the dollar loss incurred per standard lot across your stop distance derives your exact fractional lot allocation.
Worked Example

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is lot sizing the cornerstone of forex risk management?↓
Improper lot sizing is the primary reason retail traders blow accounts. Even with an outstanding technical strategy, oversized lots will trigger irreversible margin depletion during normal statistical losing streaks.
How does pip value affect lot size?↓
On non-USD quote pairs (such as EUR/GBP or AUD/NZD), 1 pip per standard lot may be worth $12.50 or $6.80 instead of $10.00. Factoring in true pip value ensures you do not inadvertently over-risk.
Can I trade fractional lots smaller than 0.01?↓
Standard retail brokers enforce a 0.01 lot (1 micro lot / 1,000 units) minimum order execution limit. If your calculation yields less than 0.01, your account balance is too small for that stop-loss distance.
Does this calculator incorporate spread costs?↓
Spread represents broker friction at execution. Always add your broker’s average spread (e.g. 1.2 pips) to your chart stop-loss distance before inputting your pips.
