Current market exchange rate of the currency pair
JPY pairs utilize 2 decimal decimal places instead of 4
Monetary change per 1 pip price movement in quote currency
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your position size in units (e.g. 100,000 for 1 standard lot, 10,000 for a mini lot).
- Input the current market exchange quote for your traded pair.
- Select whether the instrument is a standard 4-digit pair or a 2-digit JPY pair.
- Read the exact cash value generated per pip to calibrate your trade risk.
Formula & Calculation Methodology
For pairs quoted in USD (e.g. EUR/USD), 1 pip on 100,000 units is exactly $10.00. For crosses, the pip decimal (0.0001 or 0.01 for JPY) is normalized by the current market rate.
Worked Example
1 standard lot (100,000 units) on EUR/USD at 1.0850
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a "pip" in foreign exchange trading?↓
A pip stands for "percentage in point" or "price interest point". It represents the standardized fourth decimal place (0.0001) in most currency pairs, or second decimal place (0.01) in Japanese Yen pairs.
What is a pipette or fractional pip?↓
A pipette is one-tenth of a pip (0.00001 in standard pairs). Modern electronic forex brokers provide 5-decimal quotes to offer tighter bid-ask spreads.
Why does pip value vary across different currency pairs?↓
Because pip value is initially denominated in the quote (second) currency. When your account is denominated in USD and the quote currency is non-USD, the value must be converted using the prevailing exchange rate.
How many pips are in a standard, mini, and micro lot?↓
Lot size describes units, not pips. A standard lot has 100,000 units (approx $10/pip), a mini lot has 10,000 units (approx $1/pip), and a micro lot has 1,000 units (approx $0.10/pip).
