Mulch Calculator

Calculate the exact volume of organic bark or wood mulch needed for your garden beds and tree rings. Determine bulk cubic yards for truck delivery or the exact number of bagged mulch bags to buy from the garden center.

Bulk Volume (Cubic Yards): 1.85

Total square footage of the beds to be mulched (Length × Width)

Thickness of mulch layer (3 inches is the universal horticultural standard)

Bulk Volume (Cubic Yards)
1.85

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Measure the length and width of your garden beds to calculate total square feet.
  2. Select your desired depth (3 inches is ideal for moisture retention and weed prevention).
  3. Review the total bulk cubic yards for pickup or bulk delivery.
  4. Check bag counts if purchasing retail 2 cu ft or 3 cu ft bags.

Formula & Calculation Methodology

CubicYards = (Area_sqft × Depth_inches) ÷ 324 | CubicFeet = Area_sqft × (Depth_inches ÷ 12)

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet (3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft). Converting 1 cubic yard to inch-feet yields 27 × 12 = 324 square feet covered at 1 inch depth.

Worked Example

200 sq ft garden bed mulched at standard 3-inch depth

areaSqFt: 200
depthInches: 3
Result: 1.85 Cubic Yards (50.0 cu ft • 25 bags of 2 cu ft • 17 bags of 3 cu ft)

Small flower border: 60 sq ft at 2 inches depth

areaSqFt: 60
depthInches: 2
Result: 0.37 Cubic Yards (10.0 cu ft • 5 bags of 2 cu ft)

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?↓

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. Therefore, 1 cubic yard contains exactly 13.5 bags of 2-cubic-foot mulch, or 9 bags of 3-cubic-foot mulch.

How deep should mulch be applied?↓

University agricultural extension services recommend 2 to 3 inches of wood or bark mulch for landscape shrub and flower beds. Applying mulch deeper than 4 inches can suffocate shallow plant roots and inhibit water penetration.

Should mulch touch tree trunks or shrub stems?↓

No. Never pile mulch against tree bark (avoid "mulch volcanoes"). Keep mulch 3 to 6 inches away from woody trunks to prevent moisture rot, fungal colonization, and rodent damage.

What is a limitation of buying bulk mulch vs. bagged mulch?↓

Bulk mulch is substantially cheaper per yard for areas over 2 cubic yards, but requires delivery fees or a pickup truck, whereas bags are cleaner and easier to transport into tight backyards.
