One Rep Max Calculator

Safely estimate your single-repetition maximum (1RM) without attempting high-risk maximal failure lifts. Using empirical strength equations from Matt Brzycki and Boyd Epley, calculate your maximum single-effort capacity and exact training percentages for progressive overload programs.

Estimated One Rep Max (1RM): 0

Total weight of barbell and plates lifted for completed repetitions

Number of repetitions completed with strict technical form to failure (most accurate under 10 reps)

Estimated One Rep Max (1RM)
0.0

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Warm up thoroughly and select a working weight that allows 3 to 8 clean repetitions.
  2. Perform the set with strict technique until technical failure (no hitching or momentum).
  3. Enter the weight lifted and repetitions completed into the fields above.
  4. Use the calculated 1RM and percentage table to design your weekly percentage-based training cycles.

Formula & Calculation Methodology

Epley: 1RM = W × (1 + R ÷ 30) | Brzycki: 1RM = W × [36 ÷ (37 - R)]

Both formulas mathematically project maximal single-effort strength from submaximal repetitions performed to momentary muscular failure. Accuracy is highest when repetitions completed are between 2 and 8.

WSubmaximal weight lifted in kilograms
RClean repetitions performed to momentary technical failure
1RMPredicted theoretical maximum lift for one repetition

Worked Example

Bench pressing 100 kg for 5 completed repetitions

weightLiftedKg: 100
reps: 5
Result: Consensus 1RM: 114.6 kg (Epley: 116.7 kg, Brzycki: 112.5 kg, 85%: 97.4 kg, 75%: 86.0 kg)

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is calculating 1RM from submaximal sets safer than testing a true 1RM?↓

Attempting a true maximum 1-rep lift places severe mechanical stress on tendons, ligaments, and the nervous system. Testing a submaximal 3-to-5 repetition set provides comparable accuracy while dramatically minimizing acute injury risk.

Why does formula accuracy decline beyond 10 repetitions?↓

Sets exceeding 10 repetitions engage higher proportions of muscular endurance, cardiovascular stamina, and localized lactic acid accumulation rather than pure neurological motor unit recruitment and maximal mechanical tension.

Do 1RM formulas differ between upper and lower body exercises?↓

While the Epley and Brzycki equations are applied universally, multi-joint lower body lifts (squats, deadlifts) recruit larger muscle cross-sectional areas and often allow athletes to perform slightly more reps at higher percentages of 1RM than upper body movements (bench press, overhead press).

What is RPE and how does it relate to 1RM percentages?↓

Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) measures Repetitions in Reserve (RIR). RPE 10 represents 0 RIR (true failure), RPE 9 represents 1 RIR, and RPE 8 represents 2 RIR. Combining RPE with 1RM percentages prevents overtraining.

What is a limitation of 1RM predictive formulas?↓

Formulas cannot evaluate individual muscle fiber distribution. An athlete possessing a high percentage of Type IIx fast-twitch fibers may achieve fewer repetitions at 85% 1RM than a slow-twitch dominant athlete, slightly skewing projections.
