Pace Calculator

Convert distance and finish times into exact running splits. Whether you are targeting a 5K personal record, calibrating half-marathon intervals, or tracking everyday treadmill sessions, calculate your precise pace per kilometre, pace per mile, and sustained speed in km/h and mph.

Pace per Kilometre (min/km): 0:00 /km

Total run or walk distance (5k = 5, 10k = 10, Half Marathon = 21.0975, Marathon = 42.195)

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your workout or race distance in kilometres.
  2. Enter the time taken in hours, minutes, and seconds.
  3. Review your immediate split paces per kilometre and per mile.
  4. Use these pacing metrics to set training zones on your GPS running watch or treadmill.

Formula & Calculation Methodology

Pace (sec/km) = Total Seconds ÷ Distance (km) | Speed (km/h) = Distance ÷ (Seconds ÷ 3,600)

Pace represents the inverse of velocity—the duration taken to cover a fixed unit distance. 1 mile is standardized to exactly 1.609344 kilometres.

Total SecondsHours × 3,600 + Minutes × 60 + Seconds
PaceMinutes and seconds required to cover 1 km or 1 mile
SpeedDistance traversed per unit time in km/h or mph

Worked Example

Running a 10 km race in exactly 50 minutes and 0 seconds

distanceKm: 10
hours: 0
minutes: 50
seconds: 0
Result: Pace: 5:00 /km (8:03 /mi, Speed: 12.00 km/h, 7.46 mph, Total: 50.0 min)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the mathematical relationship between pace and speed?↓

Speed measures distance traveled per unit of time (e.g., kilometres per hour), whereas pace measures time required to travel a unit of distance (e.g., minutes per kilometre). To convert speed (km/h) to pace (min/km), divide 60 by speed (60 ÷ 12 km/h = 5:00 min/km).

What are standard race distances in kilometres and miles?↓

5K is 5.0 km (3.11 miles); 10K is 10.0 km (6.21 miles); Half Marathon is 21.0975 km (13.11 miles); and a full Marathon is 42.195 km (26.22 miles).

How does grade / incline affect equivalent flat running pace?↓

According to exercise physiology studies, every 1% grade of uphill incline increases cardiovascular energy expenditure equivalent to approximately 12 to 15 seconds per kilometre of flat running pace at comparable effort.

Why should distance runners track both min/km and min/mi?↓

International road races (World Athletics events, European marathons) place distance markers at every kilometre, while US and UK events frequently place primary mile markers. Knowing both split metrics prevents pacing errors on race day.

What is a limitation of average pace calculation?↓

Average pace cannot show interval fluctuations, negative splits, fatigue drop-off, or elevation changes throughout a course. Reviewing per-lap or per-kilometre splits provides deeper insights into race execution.
