Ratio Simplifier

Reduce numerical ratios to their lowest irreducible integer terms. Divides both terms by their Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) to reveal the simplest coprime proportion.

Simplified Ratio (A : B): 1 : 1

First positive integer in the ratio

Second positive integer in the ratio

Simplified Ratio (A : B)
1 : 1

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the first term (A).
  2. Enter the second term (B).
  3. View the simplified lowest-term ratio, greatest common divisor, and decimal ratio.

Formula & Calculation Methodology

A : B = (A ÷ GCD) : (B ÷ GCD)

A ratio is simplified by computing the greatest common divisor of both numbers via Euclid’s algorithm and dividing each term by that common factor.

AOriginal first integer term
BOriginal second integer term
GCDGreatest common divisor of A and B

Worked Example

Simplifying 48 : 64

termA: 48
termB: 64
Result: 3 : 4 (GCD = 16, Decimal = 0.7500, 75.0%)

Simplifying screen resolution 1920 : 1080

termA: 1920
termB: 1080
Result: 16 : 9 (GCD = 120)

Frequently Asked Questions

How does ratio simplification differ from fraction reduction?↓

The underlying mathematics is identical; however, ratios compare two quantities directly (part to part or part to whole) using colon notation rather than a division bar.

Can already simplified ratios be evaluated?↓

Yes. If A and B are already coprime (like 3 : 5), the GCD is 1, and the simplified output remains identical to the input.

What occurs if one of the terms is negative?↓

Ratios conventionally measure non-negative physical magnitudes, so absolute values are evaluated.

What is a limitation of two-term ratio simplification?↓

Three-term ratios (like 4 : 8 : 12) require finding the common GCD of all three numbers simultaneously.
