Six Sigma Process Control (1.5 Sigma Shift) Calculator

Calculate industrial process capability, Defects Per Million Opportunities (DPMO), process yield percentage, and Six Sigma capability rating using Motorola’s standard 1.5σ long-term drift model.

Six Sigma Level (with 1.5σ Shift): 6

Count of defective non-conformances observed

Number of chances for an error per individual part/unit

Batch production volume or total parts processed

Six Sigma Level (with 1.5σ Shift)
6.00

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the number of defects found in inspection.
  2. Enter opportunities for defect per unit (e.g. 10 solder joints per circuit).
  3. Enter total units inspected.
  4. Review the Six Sigma rating, DPMO, and yield percentage.

Formula & Calculation Methodology

DPMO = (D ÷ [U × O]) × 1,000,000 | Sigma = Φ⁻¹(1 − DPO) + 1.5

DPMO measures defects normalized per million opportunities. Motorola’s 1.5 sigma shift accounts for natural long-term thermal, mechanical, and operator drift in manufacturing.

DNumber of observed defects
UTotal units evaluated
OOpportunities for error per unit
1.5Motorola long-term empirical shift constant

Worked Example

World class quality: 34 defects across 1M units (10 opp/unit)

defects: 34
opportunitiesPerUnit: 10
totalUnits: 1000000
Result: 6.00 Sigma (3 DPMO, 99.9997% Yield)

Standard 3-sigma process: 6,680 DPMO

defects: 668
opportunitiesPerUnit: 1
totalUnits: 100000
Result: 3.98 Sigma (~6,680 DPMO)

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Six Sigma include a 1.5 sigma shift?↓

Motorola engineers demonstrated that over extended periods, processes drift by approximately 1.5 standard deviations due to tool wear, ambient temperature, and material variations. The 1.5σ shift converts short-term capability into realistic long-term performance.

How many defects are allowed in true Six Sigma?↓

A Six Sigma process generates no more than 3.4 defects per million opportunities (DPMO), representing 99.99966% defect-free output.

What is the difference between DPU and DPMO?↓

Defects Per Unit (DPU) simply divides defects by units (D / U). DPMO accounts for complexity by also dividing by the number of independent opportunities per unit.

What is a limitation of Six Sigma?↓

It strictly addresses variation reduction in existing linear processes; it does not replace innovation, creative product redesign, or agile discovery.
