Swimming Pace Calculator
Calculate and analyze your swimming pace per 100 metres and per 100 yards using standard competitive aquatics timing rules. Enter your total swim distance and elapsed minutes/seconds to establish training splits for 25m short-course, 50m Olympic long-course, and projected times for 400m, 1500m, and Ironman triathlon swim legs.
Total distance swum in metres (e.g. 500m, 1000m, 1500m, or 3800m Ironman)
Minutes portion of your total swim workout or interval duration
Seconds portion of your total swim time
Standard competition pool length for turn and lap counting
Standard benchmark pacing metric used by competitive swimmers and coaches worldwide
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your total swimming distance in metres.
- Input your overall elapsed swim time in minutes and seconds.
- Select whether you swim in a 25-metre short-course or 50-metre Olympic-length pool.
- View your instantaneous pace per 100m and converted pace per 100 yards.
- Review projected split times for 400m, 1500m, and full Ironman distance swim courses.
Formula & Calculation Methodology
Swim pacing divides total elapsed seconds by metres completed and scales to 100 metres. Imperial yard pacing multiplies 100m pace by 0.9144 (since 100 yards equals 91.44 metres).
Worked Example
Swimming 1,000 metres in 20 minutes (20:00) in a 25m pool
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is pace per 100m preferred over km/h or mph in swimming?↓
In aquatic sports, water density is ~800 times greater than air, resulting in much lower absolute speeds compared to cycling or running. Expressing velocity as minutes and seconds per 100 metres provides an intuitive, fine-grained scale for tracking stroke turnover and workout interval sets.
How much faster is a 25m short-course pool compared to a 50m long-course pool?↓
Swimmers typically record times that are 1.5 to 2.5 seconds faster per 100 metres in a 25m pool compared to a 50m pool. This advantage stems from double the number of powerful push-offs and streamlined underwater dolphin kicks off solid wall turns.
What is considered a good swimming pace for a triathlete?↓
For amateur age-group triathletes: 2:15 to 2:30 /100m is typical beginner; 1:45 to 2:00 /100m is intermediate competitive; 1:25 to 1:35 /100m is front-of-pack advanced; and professional triathletes average 1:12 to 1:18 /100m over open water.
How does wearing a triathlon wetsuit affect swim pace?↓
A neoprene triathlon wetsuit increases full-body buoyancy and elevates the lower body and legs to reduce hydrodynamic form drag. Swimmers typically gain 4 to 8 seconds per 100 metres when swimming in a legal wetsuit compared to standard swim briefs.
What are the main limitations of this pacing tool?↓
This calculator assumes continuous steady-state velocity. In open-water racing, currents, waves, sighting head-lifts, drafting in packs, and buoy turn navigation alter actual finish times.
